To become a DWC member, please fill out our Membership Form.

The Dalhousie Women’s Centre offers volunteer opportunities to those of all genders interested in serving the different capacities of the Centre. Volunteers help the Centre’s staff with daily operations and administration of the Centre and/or work on woman-positive and community-building projects in the Dalhousie and Halifax community.

The DWC has given us all the chance to expand and strengthen our personal and professional horizons. We highly encourage others to explore the possibilities the Centre has to offer.

Volunteer Categories

Shift Volunteers: Hold hours in the Centre, help out by answering phones, tidying up, running errands, postering, making posters/DWC literature, welcoming people, giving tours. If you have an hour or two to spare per week, please contact the Centre.

Volunteer Coordinators: The DWC is committed to developing volunteerism through leadership. Volunteers with training and experience work together with the Coordinator to oversee and run core Centre programming.

Core programmes are called Portfolios; they are programs that are ongoing and are central to our functioning. Our current Portfolios include: Health, Sexual Assault/Sexual Violence, Students with Children, Volunteer Management.

Training

Volunteers are trained in the operations of the DWC, crisis intervention, anti-oppression work, client service, facilitation, leadership, and project organization. The DWC believes that our projects should be driven by the skills and passions of the people who volunteer with us and whom we serve. As such, we’re committed to providing space, support, and/or funding to volunteer-led community-building projects.

Our core training includes:

Orientation for DWC members who wish to increase their knowledge/confidence about the Centre. Topics include: safe spaces, DWC policies and procedures, occupational health and safety, kitchen guidelines. Members receive DWC Orientation training. Prequisite: becoming a DWC member.

DWC Level 1: This training provides an introductory foundation for volunteering with the Centre. Topics include: intro to feminist theory, DWC herstory and Constitution, orientation to DWC services and programs, peer counselling techniques, confidentiality, etc.

Please contact the Centre to sign up for your training session, as registration is necessary.

Please note: ALL volunteers require Level 1 training.

DWC Level 2: Refers to all specialized training sessions such as Peer Counselling Sexual Assault, First Aid, Sexuality Sensitivity training, etc. While this training is open to all, we encourage Shift Volunteers to pursue their knowledge and development by attending these sessions when possible.
